(Patria) - The initialing ceremony of the Agreement between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the European Union on operational activities carried out by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency in Bosnia and Herzegovina was held at a meeting in the building of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH.
The conclusion of negotiations and the initialing of the Agreement represent an important step forward on Bosnia and Herzegovina's European path, as well as in the context of strengthening operational partnership between FRONTEX and the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
After Bosnia and Herzegovina established full cooperation with the EU Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (EUROPOL) last year, the Ministry of Security of BiH and police agencies will take a second important step in European integration and accession to the European police and security system with this act.
The agreement was initialed by Mirko Kuprešaković, head of the BiH negotiation team with Frontex and director of the BiH Border Police, and Henrik Nielsen, Director for Schengen, Borders and Visas at the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission (DG HOME).
It is a good opportunity to end this year with the initialing of the agreement with Frontex, said the Minister of Security of BiH, Nenad Nešić.
Nenad Nešić, Minister of Security of BiH, stated:
“Another big step on the European path taken by the Ministry of Security of BiH. This agreement is the result of the joint work of all members of our team. This agreement is in the interest of all citizens. Joint effort, but also proof that BiH can be a functional state. Commitment to strengthening security and BiH's European path. BiH is integrated into the European collective security system.”
This is a good way to fight organized crime, smuggling, and illegal migration, added Minister Nešić.
Ambassador Luigi Soreca, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina, said that this is proof of their commitment to the security of BiH and the EU.
Mirko Kuprešaković, Director of the BiH Border Police, stated:
“The BiH delegation had a complex task in negotiations with the EU delegation to harmonize the text of the agreement that Frontex will implement in BiH. Through teamwork and with the respect of all delegation members, we achieved success in defining the agreement, and we will initial it today. I hope that after this, all the minor harmonizations will follow leading to the final signing of the agreement text, so that we can make the border of BiH and the EU even more stable as soon as possible.”
Henrik Nielsen, Director for Schengen, Borders and Visas at the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission (DG HOME) emphasized the following:
“We have found a solution, a common interest, and mutual respect. We are approaching the final step. We hope that the final agreement will be signed in February.”
Nielsen thanked the negotiation team of our country for their cooperation.
