These are the bloodiest attacks in recent European history

The attacks in Paris, in which at least 120 people died according to official sources on Friday evening, are the bloodiest attacks in Europe in the last 40 years, after those committed in Madrid on March 11, 2004, reports the Patria News Agency.

Here is a chronology of the most serious attacks committed in Europe in the last 40 years:

- January 7, 2014 - France - two French jihadists, the Kouachi brothers, killed twelve people at the headquarters of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris for publishing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. They were killed by police after three days. During the two days after that attack, another French jihadist, Amedy Coulibaly, killed a policewoman and four more people before he was killed.

- July 22, 2011 - Norway - Right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik detonated a bomb near the government headquarters in Oslo, killing eight people, and then opened fire at a youth summer camp of the Labour Party on the island of Utoya, where 69 people, mostly young people, were killed. He is serving a 21-year prison sentence, the maximum in Norway, which could be extended.

- July 7, 2005 - Great Britain - Four coordinated suicide attacks on three underground stations and a London bus - the death toll was 56 and 700 injured. A group close to al-Qaeda claimed responsibility.

- March 11, 2004 - Spain - About ten bombs exploded in the morning in Madrid and its suburbs in four trains. 191 people died and nearly 2,000 were injured. A faction of Islamic fundamentalists claimed responsibility in the name of al-Qaeda.

- August 15, 1998 - Great Britain - Car bomb explosion in the town of Omagh in northwest Northern Ireland - 29 dead and 220 injured, including many young people. A rogue faction of the IRA claimed responsibility.

- July 19, 1987 - Spain - Car bomb attack carried out by ETA in the parking lot of the Hipercor shopping center in Barcelona - 21 people were killed and 45 were injured.

- August 2, 1980 - Italy - Bomb explosion in the waiting room of the station in Bologna, which killed 85 people and injured 200. It was the bloodiest attack in the country's history. Two members of a far-right terrorist group were sentenced to life imprisonment, but the masterminds were never discovered, writes Index.
