This winter, over a hundred elementary school students from Stari Grad learned to ski

More than a hundred elementary school students from Stari Grad spent a free winter holiday on Igman this year and attended a ski school through the Igman 2017 project, implemented by the Service for Education, Culture and Sports of the Stari Grad Municipality. The project ended last week, and all participants received certificates confirming they had learned to ski, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

The primary goal of this project was to enable fourth-grade students from elementary schools in Stari Grad to learn to ski for free. The project targeted children whose parents cannot afford to teach them the first steps of this beautiful, but extremely expensive and demanding sport. The Stari Grad Municipality allocated around 20,000 KM for this purpose, covering all costs for each student and one accompanying teacher from each elementary school, including: transportation Sarajevo-Igman-Sarajevo, four full-board stays at the Ozonski raj Home on Igman, ski school, ski equipment and certified instructors, as well as entertainment activities provided by qualified animators.

The trips to Igman were organized in three shifts for students from the schools "Vrhbosna", "Saburina", "Šejh Muhamed ef. Hadžijamaković", "Mula Mustafa Bašeskija", "Hamdija Kreševljaković", and "Edhem Mulabdić".

A donor from the Netherlands also joined the project

How much this project of the Stari Grad Municipality resonated with the public, even as far as the Netherlands, was shown by the gesture of Mr. Zaim Memagić. Namely, in mid-January, Memagić donated a large number of skis and equipment after reading that the Stari Grad Municipality was organizing free winter holidays and ski schools for elementary school students from financially disadvantaged families, and decided to contribute. The equipment was soon delivered to the Ozonski raj Home and immediately used by the students from Stari Grad. The ski school was successfully completed by 109 students (a certain number of students canceled their stay just before departure due to illness), who received a certificate of successful ski training at the end. All participants in this project are very satisfied, especially the students from Stari Grad, who are surely still summing up their impressions after returning to their school desks.
