Atik Mosque in Bijeljina Opened: No Incidents

In the presence of a large number of citizens, officials and religious servants, the Sultan Suleiman Atik Mosque, the largest and oldest mosque in that city, was ceremonially opened today in Bijeljina, writes the Patria news agency.

The ceremonial opening was attended by the Grand Mufti of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Husein ef. Kavazović, the Mufti of Tuzla, Vahid ef. Fazlović, muftis, chief imams and imams, as well as officials from the public, political and cultural life of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region.

As reported by a NAP correspondent, the entire ceremony ended without a single incident, and several hundred worshippers gathered.

The mosque was built around 1550, and in the archives in Ankara it is recorded that Sultan Suleiman I the Magnificent endowed imperial estates in Kanjiža for its maintenance. The Atik Mosque was demolished on March 13, 1993, along with all five mosques in Bijeljina.
