Group "Appeal to demolish the cross on Zlatište" founded

The erection of an improvised spite cross on Zlatište on the night between Saturday and Sunday has caused numerous reactions from the Bosnian-Herzegovinian and world public, and demands for its removal are daily, writes the BiH news agency Patria.

On September 22, the group Appeal to demolish the cross on Zlatište was founded on Facebook, gathering 2,182 members in two days.

Since the reaction of the local authorities of Republika Srpska was absent, specifically the Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad, which had previously confirmed that no permit was issued for any construction of the cross, a group of young men on the night between Monday and Sunday attempted to destroy the structure with cables, but they were apprehended by members of the Public Security Center Istočno Sarajevo.

A second attempt to demolish it followed last night when four individuals removed the concrete part from the supporting pillar, leaving the structure leaning to the right.

The Public Security Center Istočno Sarajevo has intensified security measures in the wider Zlatište area.

We remind you that the spite cross was erected "in memory of more than 6,500 killed Sarajevo Serbs," as stated earlier by the president of the Alliance of War Incarceration Victims of Republika Srpska, Branislav Dukić.

From this very location, Sarajevo was shelled during the longest siege of a city in modern history, in which 11,541 people and 1,600 children were killed, writes Patria.
