OSCE: The practice of 'two schools under one roof' exists in 56 schools in BiH

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina presented a report in Sarajevo titled "Two schools under one roof: The most visible example of discrimination in the education sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina".

The report describes the practice of "two schools under one roof" as the most visible manifestation of discrimination in the BiH education system and contains recommendations on achieving the vision of a peaceful, stable, and multi-ethnic BiH.

"This report contains practical measures that can be taken to eliminate discrimination and segregation from education," stated the Head of the OSCE Mission in BiH, Bruce G. Berton. "These measures include political dialogue, a greater degree of communication between students, comprehensive implementation of a common core of curricula based on learning outcomes, respect for court decisions, and administrative and legal unification of schools, which we consider a positive step towards ending the practice of 'two schools under one roof'. These measures require only the commitment of BiH's elected leaders."

Today, the practice of "two schools under one roof" exists in 56 schools in BiH, including primary and secondary schools, along with regional and central schools. They vary in terms of characteristics, size, and location, the OSCE stated.

It was emphasized that the Mission will continue to advocate with educational authorities at the highest level for respect for human rights, including the right to education without discrimination on any grounds, in accordance with the obligations undertaken by BiH as an OSCE member.
