OSCE appeals to authorities: Urgently return adoption of amendments to the Criminal Code of the Federation of BiH to the agenda

(Patria) - The OSCE Mission to BiH has expressed its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Inela Selimović and her son, killed last night in Kalesija.

This horrific crime, the OSCE points out, once again confirms a painful truth - domestic violence and gender-based violence are not abating and continue, despite given promises and invested efforts.

"We must not ignore this warning that the continued inadequate implementation of existing measures and preventive mechanisms creates an urgent need for stronger, better coordinated, more effective, and more accountable institutional responses to domestic violence and gender-based violence.

Delayed action means a lost life. The Mission once again calls on the competent authorities to take urgent and concrete steps, including the necessary improvement of legislation, to strengthen protection and prevention mechanisms, ensure adequate support for victims, and eliminate impunity for criminal acts of domestic violence and gender-based violence," state the OSCE Mission to BiH.

They emphasize that these steps are crucial for preventing future tragedies.

The Mission called on the Ministry of Justice of the Federation of BiH and the Government of the Federation of BiH to urgently return to the agenda the adoption of amendments to the Criminal Code of the Federation of BiH, which should have been adopted long ago.

These amendments, they point out, are key to harmonizing domestic legislation with the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention).

Further delays not only hinder necessary legal reforms but also put victims at greater risk.

The OSCE Mission to BiH remains committed to supporting the fight against violence and building a society where no one has to fear for their own safety and life, and the lives and safety of their loved ones.

"Once again, deeply shaken by yesterday's crime, we express our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Inela Selimović and her son, as well as to all citizens of Kalesija," add the OSCE Mission to BiH.
