Eight local communities decisively against lithium mining in Majevica

(Patria) - The mayors of eight local communities - Lopare, Tuzla, Brčko District, Čelić, Ugljevik, Teočak, Bijeljina, and Sapna - met to discuss and coordinate measures of action regarding the fight against lithium mining in Majevica, writes Federalna.ba.

- We explicitly oppose the opening of lithium mines and other associated elements in Majevica. The opening of mines can cause irreparable damage to people's lives and the environment and threaten the survival of the population in these areas - says the mayor of Lopare, Rado Savić.

"We will organize all further activities together and approach higher levels of government and international representatives," states the joint declaration signed by representatives of these eight local communities.

They reminded once again of the potential catastrophe threatening their region.

- The repercussions on health are truly significant, as has been proven. The question is how much it will be possible to live in that area afterwards.

Tourism and lithium do not go together, agriculture and aquaculture will be threatened - life in that radius will not be possible - warns the mayor of Brčko, Zijad Nišić.

Almir Šuta, secretary of the Tuzla City Administration, recalls their declaration of September 4, which expresses strong opposition to lithium exploitation in the Majevica area.

- In that regard, at today's meeting, we agreed that all these eight local self-government units will act jointly - emphasizes Šuta.

The participants of the meeting emphasize that this declaration obliges them to act jointly in later situations that may eventually occur.

They also state that they will jointly challenge any attempt at mining in Majevica in order to preserve the lives of the residents and the natural resources of this area.
