Orić: It was hard to step over 2,000 dead, what could I do, I had to....

Mevludin Orić was born in the village of Lehovići, Srebrenica municipality, where he lived before the war. He was engaged in agriculture and tobacco cultivation. At the beginning of the war, he found himself in Croatia, and in July 1992, he crossed through the forest from Tuzla to Srebrenica. After the fall of Srebrenica, he joined the column that was later named the "Death March", reports the BH news agency Patria (NAP).

Mevludin believes he suffered the same fate as his grandfather during World War II. He was captured on July 13, 1995, in Konjević Polje and taken to be executed along with 2,000 other men who were on the "Death March" route. Unlike his grandfather, who was never found, Mevludin managed to survive the execution and, after several days of walking through the forest, reached the free territory. Mevludin lost his father, brother, and cousin in Srebrenica.

"It was hard to step over the dead, to leave the dead behind. It wasn't two people or twenty, but two thousand... what could I do, I had to..." Mevludin said in a moving confession to AP.
