Old Town Municipality Announces Competition for the Restoration of Štrosmajerova Street

The Old Town Municipality of Sarajevo has announced a competition for the design of Štrosmajerova Street, aiming to gather quality solutions for the artistic, architectural, urban, and horticultural arrangement of the street, reports the BiH news agency Patria.

This street, which for years was blocked by numerous summer gardens, was cleared on September 16, 2015, and the municipal authorities now want to offer a different look to this street in the heart of Sarajevo.

All legal and natural persons, individually or as a team of authors, can submit solutions if they possess the necessary qualifications. Students from the Faculty of Architecture or the Academy of Fine Arts can also participate. 

The project brief states that the goal of the conceptual design is the restoration of Štrosmajerova Street with outdoor facilities that will be spatially and functionally connected to the ground-floor premises of the buildings. Furthermore, efforts will be made to restore the street's "spirit" from the time of its construction and adapt it to the stylistic expression of that era. Štrosmajerova Street was formed at the end of the 19th century as a result of one of the first major urban planning interventions undertaken by the Austro-Hungarian authorities. 
Among other conditions set for those who will attempt to provide the best conceptual design for the future appearance of Štrosmajerova Street, it is stated that: any additions or new constructions are not permitted; a functional system for drainage of rainwater, snow removal, and municipal waste collection must be considered; a proposal for facade illumination is required; urban furniture for outdoor seating with horticultural solutions, waste bins, lighting fixtures, etc., should be planned.

The best conceptual design will be selected by a five-member Commission for Selection, composed of professional civil engineers and architects with extensive knowledge and experience. The author of the best design will receive an award of 5,000 KM. The competition is open for 30 days from the date of announcement.
