Centar Municipality supports marking the 480th anniversary of the Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa

The Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa was founded on January 8, 1537, and its founder, Gazi Husrev-beg, was the son of Bosnian nobleman Ferhat-beg. Acquired knowledge, proven courage and a noble heart enabled him to pursue a successful career as a bey, gain great fame as a ghazi, and leave an indelible mark on history: as a sanjakbey he ruled Albania, Serbia and Bosnia; as a hero he became famous in Montenegro, Hungary and Croatia; as a waqif he built mosques and tekkes, schools and libraries, imarets and musafirhanas, bridges and inns, hammams, fountains and shadrvans, and he left all his properties in Bosnia, Slavonia, Dalmatia and Greece for the benefit of the people. Thus, Gazi Husrev-beg gave a strong impetus to the development of religious, economic and cultural life in the city of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa is the only school in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and there are not many in the world, that has been operating continuously for almost five centuries. It consists of two buildings, a male and a female madrasa, with the necessary classrooms and offices, as well as accommodation for male and female students.

Next year, on January 8, the Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa will mark 480 years of existence, and on that occasion the Mayor of Centar Sarajevo Municipality Dževad Bećirević, together with advisor Mustafa Resić, visited this educational institution where they were hosted by director hafiz Mensur ef. Malkić. Mayor Bećirević handed director Malkić a decision according to which five thousand marks were allocated from the budget of Centar Municipality as support for the publication of the "Monograph 480 years of Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa", which will be presented at the end of December this year as part of the celebration of this great event.

- The madrasa has 466 male and female students and 90 employees. Next year we are celebrating a great jubilee and we are very grateful to Mayor Bećirević for the donated funds, emphasized director Malkić.

Mayor Bećirević pointed out that Centar Municipality has been continuously helping the work of religious communities and institutions for years.

- In this way, we wanted to contribute to the dignified marking of the 480th anniversary of the Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa and the memory of the enduring great deeds of Gazi Husrev-beg, the greatest benefactor in the history of Sarajevo. Centar Municipality helps all religious communities and we will continue to do so in the future. We are glad that we were able to help in marking this truly great jubilee, Bećirević pointed out.
