(Patria) - The new German parliament, the Bundestag, has elected Olaf Scholz as Chancellor after Angela Merkel spent 16 years at the head of Europe's largest economy and is retiring.
Scholz will take the oath of office today, along with the new government.
The morning vote by the lower house of the German legislature – held by secret ballot and without debate – was considered a formality, reports Deutsche Welle.
Bundestag President Bärbel Bas opened the vote. Lawmakers voted 395 out of 707 votes for Scholz to become the new head of the German government.
Scholz's center-left Social Democrats (SPD) emerged as the largest party in the general election in September and have since been negotiating a coalition agreement with the Green Party and the neoliberal Free Democratic Party (FDP).
During the day, ministers from Angela Merkel's government will officially hand over their portfolios to their successors.
Scholz, who served as Finance Minister, will present his own statement to FDP leader Christian Lindner.
The new government has stated that it will place tackling the coronavirus pandemic and addressing climate change at the center of its agenda.
