Commemoration for Srebrenica victims held at Westminster Abbey

A commemoration for the victims of Srebrenica was held at Westminster Abbey ahead of the 20th anniversary of the genocide, reports the BBC, according to the BH news agency Patria.   

The Prime Minister of Great Britain, David Cameron, led the commemoration at Westminster Abbey, reiterating once again that what happened in Srebrenica must never be forgotten.

Around 2,000 guests paid their respects at Westminster Abbey, and candles were lit in memory of the fallen.
They also heard the poignant life story of the president of the Mothers of Srebrenica Association, Munira Subašić, who lost several members of her family in Srebrenica.

- They took my son, and eighteen years later we found only two small bones, and that's how I buried him - Subašić said.

- I appeal to all good people to ensure that criminals can be brought to justice, that their names are marked as war criminals, just as our children are marked as victims.

The member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bakir Izetbegović, also addressed the attendees.

- Global public condemnation of genocide will help ensure that such evils never happen again. Great Britain was the first in Europe and the world to hold a commemoration for the genocide in Srebrenica, and to promote the truth about what happened there. It was also the first to begin educating about the genocide so that the whole world would be aware of this tragic event.

The British government and Prime Minister Cameron personally took a firm stance that the genocide in Srebrenica must never be forgotten, that lessons must be learned from that tragic event, and that the international community should apply them.

I commend Great Britain's efforts in initiating and drafting a UN Security Council resolution to mark the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica.

I strongly support this resolution because it marks the anniversary with respect and discreetly pays tribute to the victims, showing solidarity with the survivors, reminding the world of the terrible consequences of inaction in the face of genocide.

This resolution should confirm and strengthen the determination of the United Nations to prevent the recurrence of such atrocities in light of the lessons learned from the Srebrenica genocide - Izetbegović said, among other things.

The commemoration was organized by the organization Remembering Srebrenica with the support of Prime Minister Cameron.
