Almost every day in BiH has had a weather alarm activated since the beginning of the year

Weather conditions in Bosnia and Herzegovina have not been usual for our region since the beginning of the year, and there have been few days when a weather alarm was not activated, writes the Patria News Agency.

Dženan Zulum, a meteorologist at the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute, told NAP that the weather alarm provides citizens and institutions with the necessary information to prepare for extreme weather, such as heavy rain with the possibility of floods, severe thunderstorms, gale-force winds, heatwaves, wildfires, fog, snow, or extreme cold with blizzards.

- So, a yellow weather alarm is issued for conditions that are unusual but can be dangerous. These include thunderstorms, temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, hail, strong winds, etc., and as the intensity of these phenomena increases, the weather alarm is activated to orange or even red, where extreme weather conditions prevail - says Zulum.

He further notes that it is particularly important to emphasize that the weather alarm is treated differently in certain areas.

- So, minus five degrees Celsius in Sarajevo is normal, but in Mostar it is not; there it is an orange weather alarm. If it is 35-36 degrees Celsius in Mostar, that is normal for them, but in Sarajevo, a warning has already been issued - says Zulum.

Otherwise, the Institute cannot yet claim whether the rain that has fallen almost every day this summer is record-breaking, but in July, up to 60 percent of the average rainfall has been recorded.

- There have often been precipitations that are not large in quantity, but the number of rainy days could potentially be slightly above average, but far from the total quantity being close to the average sum, at least for now, of course, we still have five or six days until the end of the month. As for June, it was rainier compared to the average by about 30 percent - says Zulum, explaining that showers are recorded only if they fall in the area where measurements are taken (Sarajevo, Bjelave op.a.)

- It often happens that it doesn't rain in Alipašino polje, while there are showers here. We record and log this. Otherwise, it is not considered precipitation in the Sarajevo area because it did not rain in the location where precipitation is measured. However, it was recorded that there were thunderstorms, increased winds, rain clouds, etc. - added Zulum.
