33 Years Since the Formation of the First Dobrinja Brigade, a Symbol of Resistance and Heroism

(Patria) - By laying flowers, paying tribute, holding a memorial gathering and remembering the shahids and fallen soldiers – heroes who left an indelible mark on the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the 33rd anniversary of the formation of the First Dobrinja Brigade of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina was marked. This brigade was one of the key units in the defence of Sarajevo and the state during the aggression of 1992–1995.

The brigade was formed in July 1992 in the heart of Dobrinja – a neighbourhood that was among the most endangered in besieged Sarajevo. Its ranks were filled by ordinary citizens who, driven by love for their homeland, stood up to defend their families and neighbours. On the difficult front lines of Mojmilo, Nedžarići and Aerodromsko Naselje, the First Dobrinja Brigade demonstrated exceptional courage and self-sacrifice.



More than 300 soldiers of this brigade gave their lives, and hundreds were wounded. Their heroism is the foundation of the freedom we enjoy today.

"The First Dobrinja Brigade is the pride of Sarajevo. Its soldiers stood on the front line when it was hardest, without hesitation. It is our duty to preserve the memory of their struggle and to tell the truth to the generations to come – that freedom was dearly paid for. Thank them for everything," said Omer Osmanović, Minister for Veterans' Affairs of Sarajevo Canton, on this occasion.
