Anniversary of the Battle for Žuč Hill Marked

By laying flowers at the Hair fountain and with a central ceremony on Žuč Hill in Sarajevo, the 22nd anniversary of the battle for Žuč Hill and the Day of the Municipality of Novi Grad were marked, writes the Patria News Agency.

The ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bakir Izetbegović, representatives of the City of Sarajevo, the Municipality of Novi Grad... The Battle of Žuč was one of the key battles for the defense of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the past war. On this day, June 8, 1992, in an operation by the Territorial Defense units of BiH from three Sarajevo municipalities, Novi Grad, Novo Sarajevo, and Vogošća, Orlić Hill and the plateau at Žuč were liberated. 

This year, the "Golden Plaque of Defense of the Municipality of Novi Grad Sarajevo" was awarded on the plateau of Žuč Hill. The plaque was awarded to Fikret Kereš, a member of the Army of RBiH, a 80% disabled veteran, and the recipient of the highest war award, the "Golden Lily".

The award is given for exceptional merits in the defense of the Municipality of Novi Grad Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the defensive-liberation war of 1992-1995, as well as for the organization of citizens' lives and work under wartime conditions.

Otherwise, the Municipality of Novi Grad also organized transportation for citizens, and children from primary and secondary schools from this Municipality, and Local Community Councils visited Žuč in an organized manner. A history lesson was held, and the orchestra of the Armed Forces of BiH played the BiH anthem at the beginning of the ceremony.
