23rd anniversary of the closure of the Omarska camp marked

Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the closure of one of the most notorious camps in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Omarska, through which more than 3,000 residents of Prijedor passed from May to August 1992, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

At today's commemoration, white balloons were released into the sky, and former detainees, along with their family members and families of the killed, visited the buildings and rooms where they were held. A large number of detainees were transferred from Omarska to Manjača.

Part of the detainees from Omarska were killed at Korićanske stijene and Hrastova glavica, 124 of them.

The camp was organized by local authorities after the violent takeover of Prijedor by the Greater Serbian paramilitary forces. A systematic campaign of imprisonment and expulsion of the non-Serb population of the entire region was organized, and their property was looted and destroyed.
