July 11 marked: How does Srebrenica live the remaining 364 days of the year?

(Patria) - The day after July 11, the collective funeral and burial of genocide victims from July 1995, Srebrenica is again half-empty, writes BHRT.

Its citizens, who are there throughout the year, continue their lives. How does Srebrenica live the remaining 364 days of the year?

The eyes of the domestic and international public were fixed on Srebrenica yesterday. A day later, only a few passersby are on its streets.

- The best indicator is these empty streets of how Srebrenica lives after July 11 - says Srebrenica resident Muhamed Avdić.

He highlights what everyone already knows well - life in Srebrenica is extremely difficult.

- I fear that in the next ten years under these conditions, Srebrenica might not even have an elementary school - Avdić said.

Besides empty streets, there are more and more empty classrooms. Journalist Sadik Salimović points this out.

- In Srebrenica, there are 300 students in the high school, but most are from Bratunac and Ljubovija. Children are hardly born in Srebrenica; you rarely see a pregnant woman.

As a journalist, I have recorded in my chronicle since '72. And when I look, Srebrenica was more developed 52 years ago than it is now - says Salimović.

Among those the BHRT team met in Srebrenica is journalist Marinko Sekulić.

- The people of Srebrenica know what the solution is, but so far, they say, there has been neither the will nor the desire to change things - Sekulić emphasizes.

Zekerijah Hadžić also lives in Srebrenica, who believes that everyone could live well in Srebrenica and would come to live there.

- You have the Guber spa, Perućac lake, so we would certainly know how to organize ourselves if the municipality got the resources to manage them and if politics would let go - says Hadžić.

Living in Srebrenica on the other days, apart from July 11, is just as difficult as on the 11th. Only then there are more people present, locals say.

There were many plans and projects in and around Srebrenica, but only a trace in memory remains of the once most developed municipality.

Today, Srebrenica is a municipality without a bus station, bank, bakery, or butcher shop.
