Surveillance cameras in trams have been discussed since 2010, project never materialized

The company Gradski saobraćaj Sarajevo (GRAS) has believed since 2011 that introducing video surveillance in vehicles and at public transport stops is the best way to prevent and stop attacks and incidents in general in the vehicles of this company in the Sarajevo Canton, writes the news agency Patria.

But, to this day, this project has never materialized, and a test vehicle equipped with security cameras, resistant to impacts with minimal possibility of physical damage, was first put into service in 2010.

Three cameras were to be installed in the vehicle, while it was planned to install four such cameras in articulated vehicles to ensure complete coverage of the space.

However, as GRAS weakened, this idea remained just talk, and the Government of the Sarajevo Canton is not in a favorable financial situation either.

Recently, it was officially announced that nothing will come of this project, so it is not surprising that attacks in trams are occurring more frequently.

Surveillance cameras are also used in more developed European cities, and, according to statistics, their introduction has reduced the number of incidents and vandal attacks in public transport vehicles by about 80 percent.
