In an interview with Die Zeit, a weekly newspaper published in Hamburg, Karadžić stated: „The only mistake I made concerned our army. I constantly held them back, because I believed foreigners and other propaganda. That way I prevented them from achieving even more on the battlefield“, Karadžić told journalists.
Prof. Dr. Marko Vešović has proven in dozens of articles Karadžić's tendency to lie. On one occasion, he called him Lažovan Karadžić (Lying Karadžić). This was evident during the war, and Karadžić does not give up lying even in peacetime. Not even after evidence of the crime, writes the Patria news agency.
In all negotiations in Geneva, Karadžić held a dominant position relative to the negotiators. He constantly claimed he could conquer whatever he wanted. Surprisingly, the peace mediators believed in these unrealistic constructs.
In an interview with the BBC in June 1993, Karadžić said that „it is better for Muslims to accept what he offers them, otherwise they will get nothing“.
According to the notes of Hrvoje Šarinić, Karadžić once said: „If Muslims do not accept what is offered to them – they should be finished off“. Let us also recall his threat from the podium of the Assembly of the Republic of BiH on the eve of the aggression against BiH: „Muslims could disappear... because the Muslim people cannot defend themselves“. „It will be a real slaughter“, he foreshadowed the fate of Bosniaks in yet another pre-war conversation with the poet Gojko Đogo. All of this he proved against the civilian population, for which he was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
About ten times Karadžić announced final offensives on Sarajevo, Bihać, Tuzla. And he never managed to do anything serious, except butcher civilians and cause severe destruction of cities.
Bihać was without ammunition and food for more than three years, yet it did not fall. „Chickens eat more than they do“, one Western diplomat cynically remarked.
In contrast, the Fifth Corps of the Army of the Republic of BiH liberated territories and thus fed and armed itself. Karadžić's offensives failed, although his hopes always grew: „A little more from me, a little more winter, and Sarajevo will be ours“, he declared his military strategies, relying on exhausting the population through harsh and hungry Sarajevo winters. It is absurd that a racist and criminal, in a probably commissioned interview, plays the role of a wartime humanitarian.
His offensives on Brčko failed particularly. He obtained Posavina through deceit and agreements between Tuđman and Milošević. There are hundreds of pieces of evidence and dozens of public witnesses to that betrayal-surrender of Posavina. Even in the Dayton negotiations, Milošević's statement could be heard: „Posavina was agreed upon long ago by me and Franjo“. Only through betrayal could Radovan get parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
His army, together with 27 regular units of the Yugoslav Army from Serbia permanently stationed in BiH, according to constant UN reports on BiH, which even David Owen writes about in his „Balkan Odyssey“, did nothing in BiH, nor on the corridor near Brčko.
Despite the fiercest offensives he undertook, he always suffered defeats from just one unit – the glorious 108th Brigade of Brčko. When on one occasion at the negotiations in Geneva Karadžić said he had decided to conquer several large cities, then listed Sarajevo and Bihać, Alija Izetbegović snapped back: „How wide is your state on the corridor near Brčko? A few hundred meters. What are you waiting for? Why don't you widen it?“
David Owen noticed that Karadžić then suddenly changed color and fell silent. From that moment, Owen also began to treat Karadžić's arrogance with suspicion, which until then he had believed boundlessly.
Attacks on Brčko
It will be recorded that Karadžić's state was between 600 meters and a maximum of three kilometers wide near Brčko. Everything else was his lies. His general Ratko Mladić undertook four major offensives on Brčko. In July 1993, he attacked with 68 tanks and armored vehicles, with 11,000 members of the Army of Republika Srpska. He suffered terrible losses even then and abandoned major attempts to stretch his state near Brčko beyond 3 kilometers.
