Djokovic wins title, Federer withdraws from match

The world's best tennis player Novak Djokovic won the title at the ATP Finals in London without a fight, as Roger Federer withdrew due to injury, reports the BH news agency Patria. 

Djokovic and Federer were supposed to meet on the court at 7 PM, but the Swiss player was forced to withdraw due to injury problems.

Federer was as much as 45 minutes late for his last practice before the match, and after that, he decided not to come out on the court at all before the final. Doubts about an injury began to arise then, but no confirmation came from the "O2 Arena," B92 reports.

However, Roger officially withdrew before the start of the match, likely wanting to recover for the Davis Cup final, which takes place in five days. He came out on the court and apologized to the audience for having to withdraw.

"I am not ready for the match, I tried everything. I hope you understand. I wanted to come out before you and apologize for not being able to compete. I apologize once again," Federer told the audience in London.

Djokovic thus, in an unusual way, reached his fourth trophy at the tournament of the eight best players, his third in a row.

Instead of the final match, an exhibition match between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray was supposed to be played, and after that, doubles teams Murray/McEnroe – Henman/Cash will take the court.

Djokovic: I didn't want the trophy this way

After the world's second-ranked player Roger Federer forfeited the final in London due to a back injury, Novak Djokovic emphasized at the award ceremony that this was not the way he wanted to win the trophy.

"Roger certainly didn't want it this way either, because I believe he would have come out on the court if he was even slightly ready. He also has an important Davis Cup final this weekend," Djokovic stated during the awarding of the winner's trophy.

Roger did not want to risk worsening his health condition, as he faces the Davis Cup final against France in Lille in five days. Therefore, he assessed that it was better for him not to face Djokovic, who is in fantastic form and whom the bookmakers had already declared the clear favorite in the final.

"This was supposed to be the final between the two best in the world, it won't be played for the first time, and I'm sorry about that. I had a successful season, I've been undefeated here for the third year in a row, but after everything that happened, I can't talk about my achievements. This is the crown of the season, my team and I are very satisfied with what we have done," Djokovic concluded.
