New book by Ruždija Adžović "Sebijini snovi"

The new book by Sarajevo journalist and writer Ruždija Adžović "Sebijini snovi" (Sebija's Dreams) has been published. It is a collection of short stories that talk about the lives of people, mostly Bosniaks, in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, about their destinies, habits, customs...

The plot of half of the short stories is set in Podgorica, Tuzi, Bijelo Polje, Berane, Bihor, and the other half in Sarajevo, Tuzla, and many unnamed Bosnian marketplaces.

- The collection of short stories "Sebijini snovi" was created during my journey through memories and emotional "hovering" between my two homelands - Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Sarajevo and Podgorica. Therefore, in this book of mine, as in my previous novel "Ogrlica iz Šanliurfe" (The Necklace from Şanlıurfa) and other books, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the lives and destinies of the people of these regions are intertwined.

During my literary expression, which is increasingly taking precedence over my primary profession – journalism, these two homelands of mine are intertwined: Montenegro, acquired by birth, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, my chosen homeland and no less significant in my life and emotions – stated Ruždija Adžović, on the occasion of the publication of the book "Sebijini snovi".

Reviews for the book "Sebijini snovi" were written by our renowned writer, academician Abdulah Sidran, and Montenegrin writer, Prof. Dr. Novak Kilibarda.

This is Ruždija Adžović's fifth book. His novel "Ogrlica iz Šanliurfe" (The Necklace from Şanlıurfa) has been translated into Turkish and will soon be published in Ankara. Adžović has started working on a new novel and is also finishing a book about academician Muhamed Filipović.

This book by Ruždija Adžović is like that, in both its essential elements: the fairy-tale and folkloric ("Vučko"), and the traditional-realistic, which – if we were talking about painting – would have to be called hyperrealism ("Sebijini snovi", "Usud ljepote", etc.). If your souls have not become completely numb to human misfortune and pain, be prepared to suffer and cry over the fate of a village girl whose desire to study medicine in Sarajevo is thwarted by her father's unquestionable decision to 'give her to someone in New York', to a fellow countryman there, a 'successful' businessman... And what then!?

A significant dimension of Adžović's prose is also its thematic devotion to the regions of Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, linguistic areas to which the writer spiritually and physically belongs. Indeed, Ruždija Adžović's literary achievement in the collection "Sebijini snovi" follows the path that Ivo Andrić and Meša Selimović tread as prose writers. And this means that writer Ruždija Adžović has not been overtaken by prose modernism, which is detached from the spirituality of the ethnos to which he belongs.
