The European Union should cancel the visa-free regime with Balkan countries, said the head of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) Horst Seehofer, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.
The CSU is part of a coalition with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democrats - which form the government in Germany led by Chancellor Angela Merkel.
- I advocate for the reintroduction of a visa regime for people from the Balkans. ... It is unclear why we are accepting people from the Balkans who seek asylum - Seehofer said for a German newspaper.
He added that Germany must reduce benefits for asylum seekers coming from safe countries.
According to data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, asylum seekers from Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Albania were among the top ten nationalities that sought asylum in 2014. More than 60,000 applications were submitted.
