German parliament approves aid package for Greece

The German parliament overwhelmingly approved a third aid package for Greece worth 86 billion euros on Wednesday, after Chancellor Angela Merkel managed to quell a rebellion within the conservative ranks, reports the Patria News Agency.

There were 454 votes in favour of the third aid package for Athens in the last five years in the Bundestag, and 113 against. Those who opposed it were significantly fewer than the 191 who voted against opening negotiations on aid for the over-indebted Greece in June.

Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble urged MPs to vote for the new package before the vote, saying there were no guarantees of success, but it would be irresponsible not to give Greece a chance.
