Germany: Refugee shelter set on fire, 17 people injured

A refugee shelter in Germany was set on fire in Bavaria, police said on Friday, as authorities struggle to cope with the largest influx of people fleeing violence and poverty, reports the Patria news agency.

On Thursday, 17 people were injured in a riot at a shelter in central Germany over a torn Quran, and politicians warned of rising tensions. The number of people seeking asylum in Germany is expected to quadruple this year.

Firefighters managed to bring under control a fire at a shelter in Neustadt an der Waldnaab that broke out around three in the morning.

Refugees told police they saw two people entering through a ground-floor window and a third person in front of the building. Police said they could not rule out xenophobia as a motive.
