Germany accepts 2,000 refugees per day

Germany is accepting about 2,000 new migrants per day, and rejecting about 200 others at its borders, the Interior Ministry announced on Sunday, reports the Patria News Agency.

The government has decided to implement stricter border controls after Germany accepted 1.1 million refugees last year, and the country is discussing how heavy a burden this is, ultimately for the state budget.

"People fleeing war and persecution are given safety and protection in Germany," Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere told the daily Bild am Sonntag.

"However, this means that we are denying entry to those who do not seek such protection," he said.

So far in 2016, police have turned away 200 people per day, de Maiziere said. For comparison, in the entire month of October 2015, a total of 400 people were turned away. Entry has been denied, among others, to persons wishing to seek asylum in other European countries. The ministry states that 2,000 people per day continue to arrive in Germany, writes Index.
