Bosnia and Herzegovina's Independence Day is approaching, and in anticipation of this important date, various events, ceremonies, and scientific gatherings are being organized.
Certainly, one of the most significant such gatherings is being organized by the Presidency of BiH, specifically by Chairman Željko Komšić and member of the Presidency of BiH Denis Bećirović. It is logical that this is the case, as it is a state holiday.
This year, Komšić and Bećirović are organizing a reception on the occasion of BiH's Independence Day at the City Hall on February 28th, starting at 6 PM. The Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina accepted the invitation of the President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, extended to the members of the BiH Presidency to participate in the 3rd Antalya Diplomacy Forum, held from March 1st to 3rd, 2024, back in December 2023, so the reception has been moved to February 28th accordingly.
And while the Presidency of BiH has adjusted its obligations, the leadership of SDP BiH does not have that sensibility. Or, perhaps, they intentionally do not want to have it.
Thus, Nermin Nikšić, president of SDP, and Vojin Mijatović, vice-president of SDP, were at a Ceremonial Academy in Brčko on February 28th (!?). This event also starts at 6 PM, so Nikšić and Mijatović will not be at the City Hall. Because one cannot be in two places at the same time!
Although Bećirović was nominated by SDP for membership in the Presidency of BiH, it is known to the public that the structures within SDP neither like nor respect Bećirović. For Mijatović, he is too radical (too Bosniak), and for Nikšić, he is a danger due to the fact that many would see Bećirović at the head of SDP. Otherwise, this party, due to the various actions of its factions, literally doesn't know 'where it's going' lately. And this will be proven now when Nikšić and Mijatović have delivered a 'slap' to Bećirović.
This time, the problem is that this 'slap' has also fallen on the face of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as the Prime Minister of the Federation of BiH will pay attention to a local organization instead of the highest state executive institution. This is not foreign to the leaders of the 'trojka' who made a circus in Banja Luka on November 25th, Statehood Day of BiH.
Far be it from us to say that Brčko is unimportant or less valuable than Sarajevo, but in the context of celebrating state holidays, lower levels of government should indeed follow suit, which the Presidency of BiH undoubtedly is.
But, we have already gotten used to the internal disputes within SDP BiH affecting the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its reputation, which must change quickly, because the state must not be subordinate to any narrow party or petty political games.
As our people would say, with friends like these, who needs enemies!
