Nikšić: HDZ's amendments to the Election Law aim to turn people into electoral units

President of the Social Democratic Party of BiH Nermin Nikšić received Nicola Minasi, the Ambassador of Italy to Bosnia and Herzegovina, for an inaugural visit. The topic of the meeting was the current political situation in our country, reports the Patria agency.

The Italian Ambassador expressed interest in the methods and work of the SDP within our country's political system, the SDP's stance on the reform of the Election Law, including technical amendments related to the voting process, as well as the SDP's preparations for the general elections next year.

At the beginning of the conversation, Nikšić informed Ambassador Minasi that Bosnia and Herzegovina has a complicated political system, which results in the country's regression in almost all segments.

- You cannot expect a system with 14 governments in the country to function in the way it is resolved in the countries of the region or the European Union. In such a situation, it is impossible to develop the economy, as complicated procedures deter foreign investors. Furthermore, BiH is one of the few countries in the world where you can dismiss a government but do not have the option to call early elections.

Precisely because of this situation, we have already started drafting the SDP's Election Program, in which we will present realistic and achievable solutions. Solutions that will offer relief to entrepreneurs and employers, reform the Pension and Disability Insurance Fund, improve the healthcare system, continue the construction of highways and other infrastructure... Such matters will also be the focus of our election campaign, although national parties will likely find another topic to rally their voters around again.

I think it is better to compete in matters that will bring a better life to the citizens of BiH, rather than competing in who is a greater Bosniak, Croat, or Serb - stated Nikšić, adding that the SDP will continue to advocate for technical amendments to the Election Law, in the sense of introducing electronic voting.

- We have already requested support from the international community several times for amendments to the Election Law on this issue, and we will not give up on it, as it would significantly reduce manipulation during the election process - added Nikšić, who concluded at the end that the SDP is against the amendments to the Election Law proposed by the HDZ, because these amendments are contrary to European legislation and introduce additional discrimination, meaning the HDZ wants to turn people into new electoral units.

- The SDP will certainly be part of the solution regarding the amendment of the Election Law, but these amendments must be based on the rulings of the Court in Strasbourg in the Sejdić-Finci and Zornić-Pilav cases, thereby respecting the ruling of the Constitutional Court of BiH as well - concluded Nikšić.
