Unsold food in supermarkets must be donated for humanitarian purposes

The European Parliament has called on EU countries to pass laws as soon as possible that would allow supermarkets to donate all unsold food for humanitarian purposes, instead of throwing it away!, reports the Patria News Agency.

Every year, 1.3 billion tons of food are thrown away worldwide, resulting in an annual economic loss of 750 million dollars, with negative consequences for the environment. At the beginning of May, the French Parliament decided to address this by passing a law according to which retail chains are no longer allowed to throw away and destroy unsold food products.

Under the new law, supermarkets in France will be required to donate all unsold food that is still edible to charitable organizations, while the remaining food will be processed into either animal feed or agricultural fertilizer. This is now also an initiative of the European Union.

Within the resolution on the "circular economy", the European Parliament adopted an amendment encouraging EU countries to enact laws that would allow the distribution of unsold food to charitable organizations.
