Nenad Čanak: No rewriting history!

BELGRADE, (Patria) - After talks with Johannes Hahn, the situation is clear: "Anti-fascism is one of the fundamental values of the EU," said the president of the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina, after yesterday's meeting with the European Union Commissioner for Enlargement. 

"The rehabilitation of Milan Nedić and other quislings from World War II is an obstacle on Serbia's path to the EU. No rewriting history! Death to fascism!" added Nenad Čanak.

Representatives of the opposition in Serbia spoke on Thursday with the European Union Delegation led by European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Johannes Hahn. The topic of discussion was the EU Strategy for the Western Balkans, the conditions Serbia must meet for membership in the Union, the rule of law, media freedom, and the murder of the leader of the Civic Initiative SDP Oliver Ivanović.

LDP President Čedomir Jovanović told reporters after the meeting with Commissioner Hahn that the topic of the meeting was the conditions Serbia faces to become a modern European country.

"As far as the LDP is concerned, we believe that an agreement with Kosovo needs to be reached as soon as possible, Bosnia needs to be stabilized, economic reforms in the country need to be accelerated, and an end needs to be put to these instant crises that are completely destroying society in our region. The responsibility for this lies largely with the government, and partly with us in the opposition," said Jovanović. He added that the issue of the region is very important to him, "because we do not believe it is possible to ensure a European future for the country if Bosnia remains in its current state behind our backs."
