NB: Srebrenica is our Auschwitz and we must institutionally protect the victims

(Patria) - Today we mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, established by the United Nations General Assembly, in memory of the liberation of the largest Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, where about 1.1 million people were killed with the aim of exterminating one people, the Jews.

The Independent Bloc sympathizes with the victims of the Holocaust, as well as all innocent people killed and their descendants who suffered because of their ethnic, religious, political, ideological or any other affiliation.

"The whole world made a promise that the Holocaust would not be repeated, but, unfortunately, during the 1990s we witnessed in Bosnia and Herzegovina the most severe war crimes, including genocide. Bearing in mind that the government and the parliamentary majority in the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina do not want to adopt a law that would ban the denial of genocide and war crimes, the Independent Bloc calls on the International Community, primarily the OHR – whose role that is, to impose such a law that will help in dealing with the past, so that the victims of genocide and the most severe war crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina are respected, and we call on governments at all levels in our country to encourage the development of educational programs on genocide and war crimes, thereby we must show determination to prevent the most severe crimes in the future.

We cannot erase what happened in these areas, but we must remember and tell the truth about Srebrenica, Prijedor, Mostar, Stolac, Bijeljina and all other places that deserve our full respect and remembrance. Victims must be protected institutionally, through laws, and the education system must serve the establishment of peace, trust and a completely open democratic society.
At this moment, we cannot do this alone and therefore we call on the International Community to help us, because that is the least we should do for the victims and the future of our children and the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina", the NB stated.
