Gradual improvement of air quality in Sarajevo Canton in the coming days

(Patria) - Although the air quality in Sarajevo Canton is poor today as well, according to the forecast, a more favorable situation is expected in the coming days.

During the past day, according to the report of the Expert Body for Coordination and Supervision of the Implementation of the Intervention Measures Plan in Cases of Excessive Air Pollution, a stable atmosphere and a temperature inversion below 600 meters above sea level caused an increase in PM10 particle concentrations.

The measuring stations Saraj Polje and Otoka recorded values above the average for the "Warning" episode, while at almost all stations, except for Vijećnica, the average daily values exceeded the limit of 50 µg/m³.

In addition, at the Otoka location, the limit value for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was exceeded due to increased traffic intensity.

The current synoptic situation indicates a change in trend. Light wind from the north and northwest contributes to the weakening of the temperature inversion.

According to the forecast, elevated concentrations will not last. Variable weather, with occasional strengthening of the wind, will contribute to a gradual improvement in air quality.

Conditions from January 2, 2026, are particularly noteworthy, when a more pronounced change in weather is expected with stronger southerly winds and precipitation, which should further contribute to the reduction of pollutant concentrations.

Since the prerequisites for activating the measures from the Intervention Measures Plan have not been met, the Expert Body continues to intensively monitor the situation, as well as inform the competent ministry about any possible changes.
