Nanić's Warriors: 505th Knightly Bužim Brigade Formed 24 Years Ago

24 years have passed since the formation of the 105th Bužim Shock Krajiška Brigade. On August 15, 1992, Krajiška hero and "Golden Lily" Izet Nanić was appointed commander, writes the Patria News Agency.  

Through the reorganization of the Fifth Corps and units, the brigade later received the name 505th Bužim Brigade.

During the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the 505th Knightly Bužim Brigade had 462 killed, 2,514 wounded, and 189 missing or captured soldiers, and 51 soldiers were recipients of the "Golden Lily".  

Under the leadership of Izet Nanić, the 505th Bužim Brigade distinguished itself in numerous battles against the Army of Republika Srpska and the "Abdićevci".

Among the many operations in which Nanić's warriors participated was "Breza '94", which thwarted the aggressor's attack on the so-called Bihać pocket. The Army of Republika Srpska carried out artillery-tank-infantry attacks day and night, especially on the defense lines of the 505th Knightly Bužim Brigade.

The Serb army was personally led by Hague indictee Ratko Mladić. Forces under his command launched their strongest attack on September 12, 1994, in the Sipa and Križ area.

VRS tanks were stopped only at the very trenches of the 505th Bužim Brigade. At the same time, elite units of the Fifth Corps attacked Mladić's forces from the flank and broke through the lines held by his soldiers. Mladić's units were forced to retreat with heavy losses in the face of the "heavenly force's" attacks.

Days of Freedom of the Knightly Town of Bužim 

The month of August is special for Bužim every year. From August 4 to 15, the event "Days of Freedom of the Knightly Town of Bužim" is held.

The legendary commander of the 505th Bužim Brigade and one of the greatest heroes of Krajina was killed on August 5, 1995. He set out from Ćorkovača to break through and link up with the Croatian Army in the direction of Dvor na Uni. Nanić's last order was:

-You all know the task, our goal is to link up with the Croatian Army in Dvor, but if there are no Croats in Dvor, we will go to Kostajnica. In any case, we will link up. Good luck, Nanić told his soldiers.

On that day at 2:30 PM, he was killed in the Ćorkovača area by an enemy ambush.
