Expert report on January 29: Sefić drove at 102 km/h and ran a red light

SARAJevo, (Patria) - On January 29, the findings of the repeated traffic accident reconstruction in the case of Sanjin Sefić, conducted by expert Nedim Kamenjašević, will be presented at the Cantonal Court in Sarajevo.

Although it was previously agreed that closing statements would be made after the expert's report was presented, at the request of Sanjin Sefić's lawyer Kerim Čelik, the closing statements will be made at the next hearing. This information was confirmed to Patria by Amir Agić, the father of the deceased Selma Agić.

“Prosecutor Jasminka Knežević was ready to present her closing statement last time as well, but Čelik requested that it be done at the next hearing. This is just prolonging the agony of the Agić and Malkoč families,” said Agić, who emphasized that he is especially grateful to Prosecutor Knežević, who is fighting alongside them.

Agić invited the public to attend the hearing on January 29 to hear the expert's findings, which determined that Sefić was driving at a speed of 102 km/h on the night of October 10, 2016, and ran a red light.

Otherwise, the expert examination was requested due to discrepancies in two previous traffic accident reconstructions regarding the speed of the vehicle, the point of impact, and other circumstances.

We remind you that on the night of October 10, 2016, Sanjin Sefić hit students Selma Agić and Edita Malkoč with his car while driving at a speed of over 100 km/h and running a red light at a pedestrian crossing. He then fled the scene, and both died from their injuries. The next morning, Sefić left Bosnia and Herzegovina via the Uvac border crossing and fled to Serbia. He was extradited in January 2017. In September 2018, the Cantonal Court sentenced him to 14.5 years in prison, while his accomplices were acquitted. The Supreme Court of FBiH granted the appeal of the KS Prosecutor's Office, the first-instance verdict was overturned, and a retrial is underway. The new trial for Sefić and his accomplices (except for his sister Sara Sefić) began in early July 2019. His accomplices Dino Alić, Saud Nišić, and Amar Salihović signed plea agreements and were sentenced to prison terms.

In the amended indictment, the KS Prosecutor's Office charges Sefić with the criminal offenses of a serious criminal offense against public traffic safety (Article 332 of the Criminal Code of FBiH) and the criminal offense of failure to provide assistance to an injured person after a traffic accident (Article 337, paragraph 2), for which a heavier prison sentence is prescribed compared to the initial indictment.
