AFTER IGK INTERVENTION: Encyclopaedia Britannica Corrects Word Massacre to Genocide

(Patria) - In a recently published article by Encyclopaedia Britannica, the term massacre was used instead of genocide in the context of the events in Srebrenica in 1995. Because of this, the IGK sent a letter to the editorial board of the encyclopedia demanding that the term genocide be used. The IGK letter states, among other things:

"The International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and many national courts of states have established that the intent of the perpetrators and the scale of the crime that occurred in Srebrenica in July 1995 correspond to the definition of genocide.

The genocide in Srebrenica, therefore, is not based on the political, historical or expert views of any politicians, historians or lawyers, but on facts that have been finally established on the basis of international law and the judgments of international courts in The Hague.

This year, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a Resolution declaring July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide.”

In the first response from the editorial board of Encyclopaedia Britannica received by the IGK, it states:

"Based on the allegations in your letter, I have requested the opinion of the signed author of this article, R. Jeffrey Smith, who originally wrote it for us over a decade ago. I greatly appreciate the information in your letter, which prompted us to seriously evaluate this issue.”

In the second response from the editorial board of Encyclopaedia Britannica, the IGK received confirmation that this reputable encyclopedia uses the word genocide in Srebrenica instead of massacre.

A culture of remembrance based on the institutional use of judicial, scientific and historical facts about the genocide in Srebrenica is becoming a strategy against forgetting. If we forgot Srebrenica, we would mortgage our own future. We must learn the lessons from the past in order to be more prepared to accept what comes tomorrow.
