SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The calendar for the new season of the Red Bull 400 competition, considered the toughest and most grueling 400-meter race in the world, has been announced, and one of the destinations for the jubilee tenth season of this adrenaline-fueled dash will be the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This 400-meter race is tougher than any other on the planet because runners actually sprint "uphill" from the bottom to the top of a ski jump. It is an incredibly intense race that tests the endurance of even the most competent athletes.
This year's season begins on April 26 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and ends 19 races later in Sapporo, Japan, where the world champions in this sport will be crowned.
Organizers have announced a competition in Sarajevo, where the race will premiere on August 8 at the ski jump on Igman, as an event that promises to be emotional and unforgettable.
In addition to the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, new destinations on the calendar include Erzurum, Turkey, where the competition returns after a two-year break, then Steamboat in the U.S. state of Colorado, and another city returning to the calendar - Whistler, Canada.
This season also marks the tenth anniversary of the competition that began in Austria. At the first Red Bull 400 race, 261 brave athletes took part, running from the bottom to the top of the ski jump for the first time in history. In the meantime, this sport has become popular worldwide, with more than 18,400 competitors participating in races during 2019.
The record holder for the most wins is Turkish athlete Ahmet Arslan with 16 triumphs, and among the more well-known runners are Tomas Čelko from Slovakia, Toni Palzer from Germany, Austria's Jakob Mayer, ultra runner Ekaterina Mityaeva from Russia, and Suzy Walsham from Austria. Luka Kovaćić defends his title at the famous Planica in Slovenia, which is also on the calendar this season.
Interestingly, not only professional athletes compete in Red Bull 400 races. Although some participants are famous Olympic medalists, such as Norwegian cross-country skiing legend Petter Northug and American swimmer Ryan Lochte, or multiple world mountain running champion Andrea Mayer from Austria, amateur runners can also sign up.
Over the past nine years, participants aged 14 to 93 have taken part in Red Bull 400 races. In addition to individual races, there are also relays in which members of fire brigades and special forces often participate. This unusual blend of sports disciplines makes Red Bull 400 a dramatic and unpredictable event where concentration, determination, and courage are the deciding factors.
