Announcement of New Policy: Denis Bećirović Receives Support from a Broad Social Community in a Short Time

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The Social Democratic Party of Bosnia and Herzegovina (SDP BiH), at its party Convention held last Sunday in Sarajevo, announced that their candidate for the Presidency of BiH in the October General elections will be Denis Bećirović.

In his speech at the Convention, Bećirović stated that if elected to the Presidency, he will not be a member who represents the interests of his party and only the people he comes from, but will be in the service of the state of BiH and all its citizens.

A large number of citizens, non-governmental organizations, civic associations, members of the academic community, and other political parties that will not have their own candidates for the Presidency, very quickly decided to publicly support Bećirović in his bid for the Presidency.

In recent days, independent mayors from Krajina, A-SDA, the Serb Civic Council in BiH, the Bosniak Movement for Equality, and respected professor Tomislav Išek have publicly supported the SDP's candidate. As announced by the SDP, the support of numerous other organizations and individuals is expected in the coming days.

This only shows that people in this country are tired of inter-ethnic and inter-party divisions in society, and that it is possible to gain broader support from many social structures if a candidate has a good plan.

Denis Bećirović did not reinvent the wheel, which is why people decided to support him. He simply announced that he will do what the Constitution requires and what is expected of a member of the Presidency.

The BiH Constitution states that the Presidency consists of three members, one from each of the three constituent peoples in BiH, but that the role of each of them is to protect the interest of the state and every individual in the country, not just the people they come from.

The fact that previous members of the Presidency considered themselves elected to represent only one people in BiH, and to pursue policies that most often benefited neighboring countries at the expense of the one that paid them, is another matter.

That is not Denis Bećirović's fault.

Bećirović announced that in the Presidency he will do only what is normal in any developed society; that he will not divide people by nationality. That was enough for a large number of people who are not members of his party, nor members of his people, to offer him support within just five days of his candidacy announcement.

On the other hand, along with the support he is receiving, the first attacks on Bećirović have also begun.

They are also coming from all sides, from individuals, politicians, and certain media outlets, who already feel threatened because their political concept of confining themselves to national enclaves is slowly starting to crumble. In a country that aspires to join the EU as soon as possible, electing a politician to the Presidency who has no problem stating which people they belong to, but that this does not prevent them from working in the interest of others living in this country, should be something completely normal. /H.
