Nagorno-Karabakh: Fighting Continues, Civilian Casualties Rise on Both Sides

(Patria) – Fighting between the military forces of Azerbaijan and Armenia in the mountainous enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh continued overnight.

The renewed conflict between the two countries over the region of Azerbaijan inhabited by a majority Armenian population represents the fiercest confrontation in decades.

The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan issued a statement saying, among other things, that Armenian forces attempted to regain lost positions with counterattacks towards the Fuzuli, Jabrayil, Aghdara, and Tartar regions.

At the same time, the Ministry of Defense of Armenia reports that Azerbaijani forces have launched a 'major offensive on the front lines of the southern and northern regions of Karabakh'.

According to Western media reports, the number of civilian casualties has risen to 11, with 9 in Azerbaijan and 2 in Armenia, bringing the total number of casualties to 95. 

Let us recall that Armenia and Azerbaijan have been disputing the territory since the 1990s, when Karabakh, an enclave in Azerbaijan inhabited by ethnic Armenians, declared independence after a war in which about 30,000 people lost their lives.

The independence of Karabakh has not been recognized by any country, not even Armenia, and it is still considered part of Azerbaijan.
