(Patria) - The team of BiH competitors, who achieved sensational results at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Great Britain four days ago, was ceremonially welcomed at Sarajevo Airport this evening.
Our students, who have written the history of BiH mathematics in golden letters, bringing home three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals from this competition, were welcomed with pride and joy by parents, representatives of the Ministry of Education of KS, the Institute for the Development of Pre-university Education of KS, the Association of Mathematicians of KS, and numerous students and friends.
This is the first time that all students from BiH have won medals at the IMO.
Gold medals were won by Benjamin Mujkić, a 3rd-year student at the Second Gymnasium Sarajevo, Andrej Krčmar, a 2nd-year student at Banja Luka Gymnasium, and Vuk Janković, a 1st-year student at the "Jovan Dučić" Gymnasium Trebinje.
This is the 32nd time BiH has participated in the IMO, the most prestigious mathematical competition in the world, and in the previous 31 participations, no student had managed to win a gold medal.
The other students from BiH were also phenomenal: Harun Alibegović, a graduate of Richmond Park International Secondary School Sarajevo, won a silver medal, while bronze medals were won by students from the Second Gymnasium Sarajevo - Adnan Osmić and Naida Gavranović.
The team leader at this year's, historic for BiH, mathematical olympiad was Adisa Bolić, and her deputy was Bojan Pažin.
- This is a great success for our mathematicians who work diligently. Thanks to the Association of Mathematicians of KS, we can achieve a significant leap in the overall ranking.
We are thirteenth in the world, and that is a truly great achievement for BiH. Such a placement gives us hope that we will continue to achieve such victories and results in the future - emphasized the Minister of Education of KS, Naida Hota-Muminović, and presented commemorative gifts to the student competitors.
- It should be noted that in Canton Sarajevo, in September, we provide monetary awards in the amount of a one-year scholarship for students who achieve great placements and results in international competitions. I am sure that they are the engine of our country - added the minister.
In the team standings at this competition, Bosnia and Herzegovina took 13th place out of 108 countries, which is by far the best team placement in history. The previous best placement was 29th place.
