Around Two Million Muslims Gathered on Mount Arafat

Nearly two million Muslims from around the world gathered today on Mount Arafat near Mecca, which is one of the main conditions for the validity of the largest Muslim pilgrimage - the Hajj. During the day, believers will pray for the forgiveness of sins, not only for themselves but also for their loved ones.

Saudi media mention close to two million Muslims from more than 160 countries around the world, dressed in the same simple white clothing, which is meant to symbolize the unity of Muslims, modesty, and equality before God. All believers, rich and poor, dress the same while performing the religious rites of the Hajj.

The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam that every Muslim should perform at least once in their lifetime, if their financial situation allows.

Many begin their pilgrimage in Medina, the place where the Prophet of Islam Muhammad is buried, a few days before the official start of the rites. The official observance of the Hajj begins in Mecca, the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and the holiest city in Islam. Before arriving at Mount Arafat, believers perform a series of other religious rites.

After spending the day on Mount Arafat, pilgrims will head to Muzdalifah, collecting pebbles along the way for the symbolic stoning of the devil on their way to the valley of Mina, where they will sacrifice a korban.
