Hikers from Poland to join 'Grebak – Path of Life' mountain hike

The route over Mount Grebak was the only way to deliver medicine and food to the besieged population of Goražde during the war years from 1992 to 1994, writes the Bosnian news agency Patria.

Thousands of people from besieged Goražde walked for days to Grebak to bring flour to the exhausted population. Many on that route, more than 60 kilometres long, died from the cold or were killed in ambushes.

The "Path of Life" Goražde – Grebak – Igman – Trnovo – Pazarić was secured by fighters of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the help of units from Goražde, the 1st Foča Brigade, and the 1st Corps of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

With the desire to worthily commemorate the heroism, suffering, and sacrifices, as well as the feats of the people of Gornje Podrinje who, traversing the "Path of Life," survived unprecedented horrors, the Bosniak Mountaineering Society Goražde-Maglić organises the mountain hike “Grebak – Path of Life'' every year on 28 February.

Zajko Šovšić from the association told the Bosnian news agency Patria that this year they expect hundreds of hikers from across Bosnia and Herzegovina to join the mountain hike.

- A group of hikers from Serbia has also announced their arrival. Hikers from Poland will join us. They have heard about our hike and will gladly pay tribute to the people of Gornje Podrinje - said Šovšić.

According to estimates by non-governmental organisations, around 30,000 people crossed over Mount Grebak, finding refuge on the free territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, writes NAP.
