Nissen Fundoplication Performed at the Clinic for General and Abdominal Surgery in Sarajevo

At the Clinic for General and Abdominal Surgery of the University Clinical Center Sarajevo, during 2015, a large number of laparoscopic surgical procedures were performed, which were not previously done, reports the news agency Patria.

The latest in a series of operations is the Nissen fundoplication, which was performed on a patient over 60 years of age. The postoperative treatment in the hospital lasted two days, and the patient feels exceptionally well and was discharged for home care.

The head of the Clinic for General and Abdominal Surgery, MSc. Dr. Jusuf Šabanović, explains that Nissen fundoplication is a method used for hiatal hernia, which is a common disease today.

This is a condition where the stomach protrudes from the abdominal cavity into the chest cavity. Patients experience severe pain, acid from the stomach flows toward the esophagus and damages it, and if not treated in time, it can lead to esophageal cancer, which is why prevention is of great importance.

- Laparoscopic surgical procedures carry fewer chances of complications, and postoperative recovery and hospital stay are significantly shorter - pointed out Dr. Šabanović.

This expert from UKCS added that a large number of operations are now performed laparoscopically, which makes it easier for patients to decide on surgery, as the possibilities for postoperative complications are also far smaller, reports NAP.
