Bosnia and Herzegovina flag traditionally raised on Hum

(Patria) - The observance of March 1st – Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina, began this morning with the raising of the state flag on Sarajevo's Hum hill, accompanied by the anthem.



Representatives of all levels of government and citizens also attended the ceremony.

March 1st, Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is celebrated on the occasion of the successfully conducted referendum on the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina, held on February 29th and March 1st, 1992. A total of 2,073,568 voters participated (turnout of 63.7 percent of eligible voters in BiH). As many as 99.7 percent of those who voted in the referendum declared themselves in favour of independence.

The referendum question was: "Are you for a sovereign and independent Bosnia and Herzegovina, a state of equal citizens, peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina – Muslims, Serbs, Croats, and members of other nations living in it?"

Following the vote on independence, Bosnia and Herzegovina was recognized by many countries around the world and the state soon became a full member of the United Nations (UN), as well as numerous other international organizations.
