The Post Office was built in 1913, during the Austro-Hungarian rule of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and served as a military post office.

The Post Office was supposed to be opened in 1914 by the Austrian heir to the throne, Franz Ferdinand, but he was killed near the Post Office building in the famous assassination that would trigger the First World War. It was from the Sarajevo Post Office that the news of Ferdinand's murder was sent out into the world.

The first phase of the renovation of the devastated post office began as early as 1994, when the conflicts in BiH were not even over. The complete reconstruction of the building was completed in 2001. The adaptation and reconstruction of the building was done by Ferhad Mulabegović, who also worked on the project of renovating the City Hall.
