Srebrenica Genocide Museum to open its doors to visitors next week

(Patria) - The Genocide Museum at the Potočari Memorial Complex will be open to visitors from next week.

This is the largest museum in the world dedicated to the Srebrenica genocide, covering an area of approximately four and a half thousand square meters.

Installations of mass execution sites, such as a replica of the House of Culture in Pilica, where more than 500 people were killed, artifacts found in mass graves, items belonging to victims, and personal stories of survivors are just part of the museum.

"This space where we are currently located, where the Genocide Museum is housed, is a historical space. It is significant because 5 to 6 thousand refugees stayed in this hall in the former Dutch battalion base, those refugees who were allowed to enter the base," says Azir Osmanović, curator of the Potočari Memorial Center.

"It also includes the struggles of mothers, the fight for justice, for the identification of those killed in the genocide, the discovery of mass graves, and finally, the establishment of the Memorial Center," stated Almasa Salihović Huseinović, spokesperson for the Potočari Memorial Center.

One of the walls is dedicated to photographs of genocide victims, and there is also a replica of a mass grave. The project implementation lasted four years and was financed by the Republic of Turkey.

This museum will permanently bear witness to the genocide in Srebrenica committed in July 1995 and send a message that it will never happen again to anyone.
