Munira Subašić addresses Aung San Suu Kyi: Stop the persecution of the Rohingya people

Munira Subašić, President of the Association of Mothers of the Enclaves of Srebrenica and Žepa, has sent a dramatic letter to Aung San Suu Kyi, the Prime Minister of Myanmar, regarding the persecution and mass killings of the Rohingya people.

- I am addressing you as a mother from Srebrenica and a fighter for truth and justice, and as a woman who lost more than 22 family members during the genocide committed in Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina. I am addressing you in the name of justice and in the hope that you will understand my appeal as the cry of a mother who does not want any child to be killed just because they have a different name and belong to a different faith.

I believe you are aware of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina during 1992-1995 and the genocide in Srebrenica, and that you have seen images of the killed and persecuted innocent people, especially women and children. I not only remember that suffering every day, but I have survived it and believe I remained alive to seek truth and justice for the victims. In recent weeks, those images have again become my daily nightmares because in your country, innocent people, Rohingya Muslims, are currently being persecuted and killed. Their suffering and pain that penetrates our TV screens is indescribable for those of us who have gone through the same, it directly stabs our wounds.

You, as a mother and a Nobel laureate, should know that every life, especially a child's, is worth fighting for without political points and the approval of a political party. Your voice was loud for the democratic struggle of your country, today it should be louder against the persecution, killing, ethnic cleansing, and genocide of Rohingya Muslims. I appeal to you to do everything in your power to stop the persecution and killing of innocent people, to grant them peace and freedom to live as your fellow citizens. It is time to justify your Nobel Prize, because in such times, a person is judged by their good deeds, principles, and beliefs, not during times of peace.

I also appeal to your government and the international community to prevent the killing and suffering of Rohingya Muslims. We must not allow ourselves to destroy the little dignity that humanity has left. With a heavy heart - writes Munira Subašić at the end of the letter.

This letter was a call from the site of the Srebrenica genocide to awaken consciences in the face of the tragedy of the Rohingya people.
