Mogherini: 70 years after the Holocaust, anti-Semitism still exists

Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp and the International Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust, said she joins many around the world in commemorating the worst crime in human history, a crime in which six million Jews, as well as millions of other innocent victims, such as Roma, political prisoners, prisoners of war, persons with disabilities and homosexuals, were killed in Nazi death camps, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

- This year, the International Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust is of particular importance as it coincides with the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.
We must never forget the victims of the Holocaust, just as we must not forget the daily struggle of the survivors who still carry within them not only painful experiences, but also memories that serve as a lesson for future generations.
For us in Europe, today's commemoration ceremony takes place in a context of sobering. The recent terrorist attack on a kosher supermarket in Paris, in which four people were killed, is an ominous reminder of the presence of violent anti-Semitism. Seventy years after the Holocaust, there are Jewish communities in Europe that again feel threatened.

Therefore, today more than ever, it is not enough to say „Never again“. We must translate these words into action. Today, more than ever, we must acquaint generations born after the Holocaust with the horrific events on European soil and educate them to oppose anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination.

According to the words of Primo Levi, the famous Italian writer who survived Auschwitz: „It is neither easy nor pleasant to delve into this abyss of cruelty, yet I think there is no other way, because what was done yesterday can be attempted again tomorrow and could overwhelm us and our children“.
