Young man died of flu?

In Split hospital yesterday morning, suspected of consequences of a viral infection, a patient died. If it is confirmed that the patient died as a result of the flu, it will be the first death from flu this year, writes Slobodna Dalmacija, reported by the Patria News Agency.

- It is about a young man who, according to relatives, was completely healthy until now. After having a high temperature at home for several days, he was admitted to the Clinic for Pulmonary Diseases of KBC Split on Saturday, and due to his health condition, an internist's consultative examination was requested.

After this examination, the patient's condition worsened drastically very quickly, and he was transferred to our ICU with severe pneumonia. Despite the fact that we took all the treatment measures known to modern medicine, the patient's health condition worsened terribly quickly.

We connected him to a ventilator, but his condition did not improve. On Saturday evening, we connected the patient to an ECMO device, but that also yielded no results,' said doc. dr. Nenad Karanović, head of the Clinic for Anesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Care at KBC Split.

He adds that there was a gradual failure of all organs, from which the man eventually died.

The patient's blood was sent for testing, and the cause of death will likely be determined.

- We suspect that the patient died of a viral infection, and flu is included in such infections, said Dr. Karanović.

He also says that in his 30 years of career, he has not seen anyone's health condition deteriorate so drastically, almost from minute to minute.
