Miroslav Lajčak the first EU Special Envoy for the Western Balkans?

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Outgoing Slovak Foreign Minister and career diplomat Miroslav Lajčak, it is speculated, could become the first EU Special Envoy for the Western Balkans.

This position would be established by the European Commission in cooperation with the European External Action Service (EEAS), EURACTIV.com writes today, as reported by Montenegrin Vijesti.

At the end of 2005, ahead of the referendum in Montenegro, then EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security Javier Solana appointed Lajčak as his special representative in that country.

Lajčak was the High Representative in BiH and briefly worked in the EEAS.

The EU has not had a special representative for the region aspiring to membership so far, and the negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina were mediated by former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

For several months now, the US has also had special envoys in the region - Matthew Palmer was appointed Special Representative of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for the Western Balkans, and Richard Grenell was appointed by US President Donald Trump as Special Representative for the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.
