German Minister of Defence in BiH: We want to prevent Russia from misusing this region

(Patria) - German Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius is on an official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and after a ceremonial reception, he met with the Minister of Defence of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zukan Helez. He also met with members of the Presidency of BiH.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Minister Helez stated that they discussed Germany's support for NATO integration and what BiH needs to fulfill.

"Germany is one of BiH's key friends in foreign policy. Germany fully supports BiH's path towards the EU and NATO alliance. Thank you to the minister for all that has been done for BiH and the Armed Forces. From 2021 to 2025, Germany is investing over 20 million KM to improve conditions for the Armed Forces," said Helez.

German Minister Pistorius emphasized that he is pleased to hear that his country is the biggest supporter of BiH and that they are contributing to strengthening capacities.

He added that the key to the region's stability is a stable BiH, and that BiH is welcome as an EU member.

The German Minister of Defence also spoke about Russian influence in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and about a possible crisis and destabilization.

“We want to prevent Russia from causing an additional crisis, destabilization, from misusing this zone to spread its influence, hoping to destabilize the West in this way. Germany will support the engagement of EUFOR Althea. It is very important that the forces can remain in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and I am glad how they are welcomed here, as they also contribute to a secure environment for necessary reforms,” said Pistorius and added:

“NATO and the EU have a clear stance when we talk about Russia's aggressive actions. The most important thing is that the partnership between NATO and Bosnia and Herzegovina has been running very successfully since 2006,” said the German minister.

He also added that Germany will support Bosnia and Herzegovina on its path to Euro-Atlantic integration.

“Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the entire region, are very important for the stability and security of Western Europe. Germany sees the future of the region in the European Union,” said Pistorius.
